Frequently Asked Questions

Spray Foam Insulation Questions

How much does spray foam insulation cost in New Orleans?

National guides put installed foam at $1.50 to $5.00 per square foot (HomeGuide). Open-cell is at the low end, closed-cell at the high end. A raised-floor job or an attic roof deck often lands in the low thousands. We give you a written price after a visit.

What are the pros and cons of spray foam insulation?

It seals air and insulates in one step, does not settle, and closed-cell resists water. It costs more than loose fill, it is hard to remove, and it can hide leaks or termite activity if those are not handled first.

Can mold grow behind spray foam insulation?

Foam is not food for mold, but if a roof or plumbing leak wets the wood behind it, the wood can still rot or grow mold. That is why we check for leaks first and why sealed attics need humidity under control.

Should I insulate under my raised house?

Usually yes. The DOE suggests R-13 for an uninsulated floor in zone 2. Closed-cell foam under the subfloor seals drafts and does not soak up water if the area floods.

What R-value does a New Orleans attic need?

Louisiana's code summary lists R-38 for ceilings in new homes. The DOE suggests R-49 to R-60 for an uninsulated zone 2 attic, or adding R-38 to R-49 over 3 to 4 inches.

Does Energy Smart help pay for insulation?

Entergy's Energy Smart page describes home assessments with instant discounts or free weatherization on recommended follow-up work. Check current rules and amounts with the program.

Spray Foam Insulation Questions

Who manufactures spray foam insulation?

Several companies make spray foam systems for contractors. We tell you which product we plan to use on your quote, and you can look up its data sheet.

Is closed-cell worth the extra cost under a raised house?

Usually, because it does not soak up water and it holds up in outdoor air better than batts. Open-cell is not a good choice under a raised floor.

Will foam under the floor trap moisture in the wood?

Closed-cell slows vapor but the subfloor can still dry to the inside of the house. Problems come when a leak wets the wood, so plumbing leaks get fixed first.

How long does spray foam take to cure?

It firms up quickly, but HomeGuide advises staying out of the house for at least 24 hours. We confirm the timing for your job.

Attic Encapsulation Questions

Will a sealed attic make my roof shingles too hot?

Shingles on a foamed deck run a little warmer. Some shingle makers have rules about unvented roofs, so check your warranty paperwork. We can give you the foam type and thickness to ask them.

Do I still need attic ventilation?

No, a sealed attic is unvented by design. It does need humidity managed, often with a small air supply or dehumidifier.

Can you encapsulate an attic with old insulation on the floor?

Yes. Clean, dry fill can stay. Wet, moldy or rodent-fouled material should come out.

How long does an attic encapsulation take?

Most homes take one to two days plus curing time. Plan to be out for at least 24 hours.

Raised Floor & Crawl Space Insulation Questions

Why are my floors so cold in winter?

A raised floor with little or no insulation is exposed to outside air underneath. Foam under the subfloor fixes the drafts and the chill.

Can you insulate if there is only a foot of clearance?

Sometimes, depending on access. Very low spaces may need a larger opening or a different approach. We check during the visit.

Will foam under my house help in summer too?

Yes. It keeps humid air from leaking up through the floor and reduces moisture on ducts and framing.

What about ducts under the house?

Ducts under a raised house should be well sealed and insulated. We point out any that are sweating or falling apart.

Do you insulate the floors of porches and additions?

Yes, when they are enclosed and conditioned. The same under-floor approach applies.

Wall Insulation for Older Homes Questions

Can you insulate a shotgun house without tearing out walls?

Usually, with dense-pack cellulose through small holes, from inside or outside.

Will dense-pack settle over time?

Packed at proper density it should not settle much. Loose blowing into walls is what settles.

Do I need HDLC approval to insulate walls?

Work done from inside usually does not change the exterior. If holes are drilled outside in a historic district, check with the HDLC or VCC first.

Is wall insulation worth it if I already did the attic?

In a shotgun, the side walls are most of the exterior, so yes, they are often the next step.

Does wall insulation help with street noise?

Dense-pack cellulose fills the cavity and dampens some sound. Windows and doors still carry most of the noise.

Blown-In Insulation Questions

Is blown-in or spray foam better for my attic?

If ducts and equipment are in the attic, foam on the roof deck often makes sense. If not, sealing and blowing in to depth usually gives more for the money.

Does cellulose attract pests?

It is treated for pests and fire. Rodents can still nest in any insulation if they can get into the attic, so entry points should be closed.

How long does blown-in take?

Most attics are sealed and blown in a day.

Will blown-in insulation settle?

Loose fill settles a little. We blow to the settled depth needed for the target R-value.

Can blown-in go over old fiberglass?

Yes, if the old material is dry and clean. Wet or fouled material comes out first.

Storm-Damaged Insulation Removal Questions

Does insurance cover insulation replacement after a storm?

That depends on your policy and the cause. Our itemized quote helps you and your adjuster see the work.

Can wet insulation dry out and stay?

Lightly damp loose fill may dry if the leak is fixed fast, but flood-soaked or matted insulation should be replaced.

How long does removal take?

Most attics take a day to clear. Under-floor removal depends on clearance.

Do you handle mold?

We remove insulation, not mold. If we see mold on framing, we tell you so it can be handled by the right specialist.

Can you remove just part of the attic insulation?

Yes. If a leak soaked one section, we can replace that area and blend new material into the rest, as long as the remaining insulation is dry.
