The Value Option
Blown-in insulation is the lower-cost way to bring an attic up to depth. Loose cellulose or fiberglass is blown across the attic floor and settles into a thick blanket. In many New Orleans homes, especially those without ducts or equipment in the attic, sealing the attic floor and blowing to depth gives most of the benefit of a foamed attic for less.
Air seal first
Loose fill slows heat but does not stop air. Before blowing, we seal the attic floor: wire and pipe holes, top plates, gaps around lights and fans, chases, and the hatch. Old houses with tall ceilings often have open wall tops that run down into the walls; those get plugged too.
How deep
The Department of Energy suggests R-49 to R-60 for an uninsulated attic in zone 2, or adding R-38 to R-49 over 3 to 4 inches. Louisiana's code summary lists R-38 for new ceilings. We write the target R-value and depth on the quote and staple depth markers to the framing.
Cellulose or fiberglass
Cellulose is recycled paper treated for fire and pests; it is dense and slows air somewhat. Fiberglass is lighter and does not absorb water the same way. Fixr lists fiberglass at $1.65 to $2.60 per square foot and cellulose at $1.75 to $3.80. In humid attics both work if the roof is dry and the attic is vented. We recommend one or the other based on your attic and tell you why.
Ventilation
Blown-in attics stay vented. We install baffles at the eaves so the fill does not block the soffit vents. If your attic has little ventilation, we note it so your roofer can address it. Get a free estimate
Cost
HomeGuide lists blown-in at $1.00 to $2.80 per square foot and a typical attic at $900 to $3,600. Fixr lists $1,750 to $5,500 for about 1,500 square feet. Depth, access and how much sealing is needed move the price.

Blown-In Insulation Questions
Is blown-in or spray foam better for my attic?
If ducts and equipment are in the attic, foam on the roof deck often makes sense. If not, sealing and blowing in to depth usually gives more for the money.
Does cellulose attract pests?
It is treated for pests and fire. Rodents can still nest in any insulation if they can get into the attic, so entry points should be closed.
How long does blown-in take?
Most attics are sealed and blown in a day.
Will blown-in insulation settle?
Loose fill settles a little. We blow to the settled depth needed for the target R-value.
Can blown-in go over old fiberglass?
Yes, if the old material is dry and clean. Wet or fouled material comes out first.
